IAIA12 Energy Future: The Role of Impact Assessment

32nd annual conference of the International Association For Impact Assessment: What is the role of impact assessment on future global, national and local energy decisions and choices? How can we tackle the environmental and social risks that will appear as a result of our quest for the development, production and management of new energy sources? Our view of the world and the world economy over the last 3-4 human generations has been shaped by assumptions of infinite energy supplied primarily by fossil fuels. Impact assessments have scrutinized thousands of energy projects, but few have considered the long-term future supply and sources of non-renewable and renewable energy as critical to decision-making. More integrated approaches are now being tested for biodiversity and climate change. The conference will be structured around four thematic streams: • Renewable energy • Fossil fuels • Electric powered transportation • Electric power leap.

Energy and Environment Week

Porto Energy Agency, AdEPorto, and its 8 Municipalities promote the Energy and the Environment Week joining the celebrations of the National Energy Day (29 May) and the World Environment Day (June 5). The programme has a set of different activities that invite the participation of different attendants, from professionals, to students and to the general public. Products for energy-aware data and processes in service oriented software environments

In the streamline of “Reduce Global Energy Intensity” in particular, energy efficient products, the event presents energy-efficient tools and products being developed in the GAMES (Green Active Management of Energy in IT Service centers). Tools include monitoring for energy efficiency of data centres, a Knowledge Base of Green Performance Indicators, adaptation tools allowing adjusting levels of quality of service to current energy needs, and other service oriented software. With such tools, data centres are expected to increase incrementally their energy efficiency and reducing their global carbon footprint by up to 25%, while not deteriorating their overall performance levels, ultimately contributing at large to effectively solve the problem of the greening of the ICT.
